What is this medication used for
Fludrocortisone is a corticosteroid used in the treatment of Addison’s disease.

How this medicine should be used
Fludrocortisone is not FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine; however, it is a commonly accepted practice to use in dogs and cats. In dogs the usual dose is 0.009mg/pound once a day. In cats the usual dose is 0.1mg PER CAT once a day. In both animals the initial dose is based on blood electrolyte levels.
What are the side effects
Side effects of fludrocortisone may include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, swelling, behavioral changes, high blood pressure and diabetes.
What special precautions are there
This medication should not be used in animals allergic to it or other corticosteroids. Do not use in pregnant or nursing animals. Blood tests to measure electrolyte levels and kidney function should be performed regularly. Use with caution when given to animals with seizure disorder, high blood pressure, diabetes, or liver disease.
In the event of an overdose
Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room. Symptoms of overdose may include high blood pressure, swelling, and electrolyte (sodium and potassium) changes.
How should I store this medication
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Store tablets at room temperature, away from excess heat, light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and pets.
